Set up a chess position in three steps

  1. Start from the starting position or clear the board.
  2. Pick pieces from the palette and tap squares, or drag pieces to move them.
  3. Choose the side to move and castling rights, then press Analyze this position.

Frequently asked questions

How do I place and remove pieces?

Pick a piece under the board, then tap squares to place it. Tap the same piece again on a square to remove it, or choose ✕ and tap squares to clear them. You can also drag pieces already on the board.

What is a FEN?

Forsyth–Edwards Notation describes a position in one line: the pieces rank by rank, the side to move, castling rights, the en passant square and move counters. Copy it to share a position or paste it into any chess program.

Why can’t I analyze my position?

The editor checks that the position is legal: one king per side, no pawns on the first or last rank, and the side that is not to move must not be in check. The message under the board tells you what to fix.
